“우리는 시간의 환상에 완전히 최면에 걸린 문화에 살고 있으며, 소위 현재라는 순간은 원인이 되는 과거와 흡수할 수 없을 정도로 중요한 미래 사이에 있는 아주 미세한 헤어라인에 불과한 것으로 느껴집니다. 우리에게는 현재가 없습니다. 우리의 의식은 거의 전적으로 기억과 기대에 사로잡혀 있습니다. 우리는 현재 경험 이외의 다른 경험은 존재하지도 않았고, 존재하지도 않으며, 앞으로도 존재하지 않을 것이라는 사실을 깨닫지 못합니다. 따라서 우리는 현실과 소통하지 못합니다.
