“우리는 모두 자유를 선언하지만 같은 단어를 사용할 때 모두 같은 의미는 아닙니다. 어떤 사람들에게는 자유라는 단어가 각 사람이 자기 자신과 자신의 노동의 산물을 마음대로 하는 것을 의미할 수 있지만, 다른 사람들에게는 같은 단어가 어떤 사람들이 다른 사람들에게 마음대로 하는 것을 의미하고 다른 사람들의 노동의 산물을 의미하기도 합니다. 여기에는 서로 다를 뿐만 아니라 양립할 수 없는 두 가지가 같은 이름으로 불리는 자유가 있습니다. 그리고 각각의 사물은 각 당사자들에 의해 자유와 폭정이라는 서로 다른 양립할 수 없는 두 가지 이름으로 불립니다.

“We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word many mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name - liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names - liberty and tyranny.”
